Do you know the secret history of the bergamot? Where does it come from, what makes it special, and why is it the pride of Reggio Calabria?
Join me on a culinary journey through unexpected flavors and unique ingredients. This trip, organized by the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Switzerland and the Chamber of Commerce of Reggio Calabria, shines a spotlight on the “green gold” of the south.
Why the Bergamot’s Origin is a Mystery
Some legends say it comes from Pergamum in Ancient Greece; others trace it to the Canary Islands. Regardless of its origin, Reggio Calabria has become its true home—today, 90% of the world’s bergamot production is gathered here.
While mostly known as a key ingredient in perfumes, Earl Grey tea, and detergents, bergamot is a culinary superstar. On my trip, I enjoyed it as fresh juice, in artisan gelato, and as part of savory sauces paired with fresh fish and vegetables.
Did you know? It takes 200 kilograms of bergamot to produce just 1 liter of essential oil.
The Health Benefits
Bergamot is more than just a scent. It is known to release “happiness hormones” like dopamine and serotonin. Its essential oil is used to reduce anxiety, alleviate mild depression, and provides powerful antibacterial properties.
