Grand Resort Bad Ragaz

My personal highlight: Relaxing in the oasis of wellness & health famous for its 36.5 degrees Celsius water – Flying my senses high with an exceptional fine dining experience at IGNIV

Bad Ragaz is a cozy small village in the canton of St. Gallen. It is the home of a famous natural spring. It’s a popular spa and health resort destination in Europe. Beside the wellbeing factor you find wonderful art & sculptures all over the Resort and the tiny village. This place is home of The Swiss Triennial Festival of Sculpture, called Bad RagARTz. An event of international fame visited from artists all over Europe.

Discovered accidentally in 1240, the salubrious effects of Pfäfers’ mineral springs were recognised early on. The famous natural scientist, physician and philosopher Paracelsus, who is regarded as the first spa physician of Bad Pfäfers, worked there in 1535 and wrote an entire book on the therapeutic effects of the water with a temperature of 36.5 degrees Celsius.

Spoil your soul in the Thermal Water World

Experience a holistic wellness program that suits to all that want to maintain health or improve it, need relax or simply love to enjoy a swim. In the “Thermal Spa” you will find an extensive water world with the Helenabad (35°C) or Sportbad (29°C) pools. The Tamina Therme is the cherry on the top. It’s a public wellbeing oasis and haven of relaxation! Get more on the spa offer here. Enjoy their Garden Pool with an outdoor bar from May to September.

The resort is also very popular among golfers. It is the only resort in Switzerland to have two golf courses of its own. One is suitable for beginners, the other for professionals.

The Grandhotel Quellenhof – My design eye-catchers

Last July, after only five months of construction and an investment of CHF 45 million, the completely renovated Grand Hotel Quellenhof once again opened its doors. The famous Swiss interior designer Claudio Carbone redesigned the Grand Hotel Quellenhof with a concept focussed around both the hotel’s history and its thermal water.
The 16 metre high chandelier is one of the highlights. 2500 impressive blue and white spheres made of mouth blown glass shines in the stairway.
The design and size of the wine counter around the entrance of the Restaurant Verve by Sven captured my attention, too. Not to mention the fabulous modern and elegant interior of the restaurant Verve by Sven made with natural materials paired with warm colours, creating a lively and vibrant atmosphere!

Accommodation at Grand Hotel Quellenhof

Choose between different sized rooms as the Junior suite with 50 m2 with an elegant and seductive atmosphere! The materials and colors used for the interiors transmit the art of tradition meeting modernity with the special luxury touch. Explore the minibar with delicious soft drinks or and delicate red wine. What captured my attention was the bathroom! An image of the astonishing “Tamina Schlucht” overlooking the bath tube, an exceptional craftsmanship result lasered on a natural black stone. The parquet is made of Swiss natural wood and a dream to walk on. The view from the room overlooks the beautiful alps and is just the perfect setup for a peaceful treat.

A warm thank you to Grand Hotel Quellenhof for giving me the opportunity to be the first guest sleeping in the new suite!

Beside the Junior suites you find Junior suites Deluxe, (both 50 m2), Corner Junior suites (60 m2), Suites (80 m2), Grand Suites (100 m2), Royal suites (200 m2,  spacious lounge, living room, fireplace) and the legendary King Suite (270 – 600 m2 for luxury at the highest level).

Fine Dining experience at IGNIV by Andreas Caminada & Breakfast/Lunch at Verve by Sven

Fine Dining Experience at IGNIV by Andreas Caminada

IGNIV by Andreas Caminada is the place where your valuable time gets enriched by enjoyment and culinary temptations. This 1 Michelin star restaurant surprises and seduces you with a fine dining sharing experience prepared by Chef de cuisine Silvio Germann & his staff. Every course comes in small plates and is perfectly combined with a wine chosen from Chef de Service and Sommelier Francesco Benvenuto. I love the fact that most of the wines are local and let evolve every bite of the carefully prepared dishes to a high level of taste.
The ambience at IGNIV is stylish, modern with the special touch of a traditional ancient living room. The candy shop captured my attention immediately! These hand made sweets are THE must take home after the dining experience!

Try the Fine Dining sharing experience at IGNIV

The name IGNIV derives from the Rhaeto-Romanic word “nest“. Materials such as brass elements and wood as well as the arrangement of the tables give the guest the feeling of being in a nest. Every course served as for example the egg royal (served in an egg shell) makes you experience this element of the nest.

We had a 3 course sharing experience with 5 surprise components! The Sharing experience comes with a variety of very delicate prepared veggies, most of them grown local or regional. Same for the fish and meat. The dining concept is a true pleasure to share with friends, family or with your love!

The amuse bouches
Lettuce, dill – macaron, sour cream, cucumber – cabbage turnip, withe fish – egg royal

Champagne Résonance Marie Courtin

The starters
Char, radish, butter milk – Beef tartar with potato chips – lettuce, parmesan and herbs – foie gras, chocolate – mackerel Sahsimi on a table BBQ, celery – IGNIV salad –
The surprise starter: the chicken Nuggets with BBQ choco sauce

Wine: Sauvignon Blanc Opoka 2014 – Marjan Simcic

The mains
Zander filet – Beef êntrecote from Grison, celery, onions – Veal cheeks, gremolata, young carrots, bramata – Cauliflower, Grüscher Trüffel

Wine: 2017 Chardonnay Martha und Daniel Gantenbein (Fläsch) – 2010 Pinot noir “H”, Christian Hermann (Fläsch)

The Desserts
Egg royal with strawberry & basil – Cocos ice cream, Verveine – Millefeuille with cherry & pistachio, chocolate & sea buckthorn – Quark Soufflé – almond apricots sphere

The costs of the menu per person: CHF 148 for the 3 course, additional you can choose 3 surprise sharing components for additional CHF 40 or 5 surprise sharing components for additional CHF 60.

My personal highlights

The dinner at IGNIV was without doubt my absolutely memorable highlight. Each course was prepared with care and love. On the one hand, this is visible by admiring the presentation of the plates, including the artistic crockery and even more as a taste experience on the palate.
The way the all the staff welcomed me at the Grand Resort from the check in to check out is warm and attentive. Thank you Grand Resort Bad Ragaz especially Mrs. Astrid Hüni for having me.

Sevi Boutique Hotel Zanzibar

My personal highlight:
A peaceful hideaway where to slurp an exotic fresh juice and spent hours observing the crystal clear Zanzibar sea

Welcome to Sevi Boutique Hotel ! This little pearl is located in the village of Matemwe on the north-eastern coast of Unguja, the main island of the Zanzibar Archipelago, between Mwangaseni and Kigomani.

A day at Sevi Boutique Hotel starts with a hearty welcome of the staff and a delicious breakfast! Home made bread, croissants and jams combined with fresh juices to boost your energy. All of this served on a spacious terrace overlooking the sea. The African dream !

After breakfast there is the choice to either relax at the pools. One is the infinity pool overlooking the sea, the other is embedded in a beautiful garden. For those who choose a Spa day, choose out of their massages and get a swim at the pool in the SPA area after your treatment!
My mornings often started with a walk along the white sandy beaches admiring the incredible wide tides! The scenery is amazing and nature full of surprises.

What I loved best at this place is its tranquility. Traveling from the northern part of Zanzibar that is more busy and crowded with tourists and all inclusive resorts, this spot is unattractive for beach boys. All hotels here are relatively far apart.
Sometimes in the evening you see local boys and kids playing football, I enjoyed this bit of action in the hood!

My personal suggestions: As almost everywhere on the islands, the beach is dependent on the tides. At low tide, the sea can get beyond the coral barrier. An accommodation with pool is therefore recommended.

Accommodation

Find 14 different villas or Bungalows in the traditional Bandas style. The rooms are very spacious and decorated with natural materials. Little details as a hammock in the garden or private little pool make your stay extra special. I loved to do my morning yoga in 2nd floor of my Bandas and get a bath in my cozy private pool! All rooms are surrounded by a well maintained garden, this offers good privacy between every bungalow. Of course there is a mosquito net around your the kingsize bed and AC.

As honeymoon travelers or family holiday with kids opt for the Villa. It offers a seafront and all comfort you need on 250 sqm on two floors. The view out of the balcony on the second floor will leave you lots of unforgettable memories to bring back home.

Book your room here and ask for the actual rates!

Food & Drinks

As a food lover I was very happy to enjoy fresh sea food every day. The fish is caught practically in front of the hotel. The menu choice is small but special every day. There are dishes for vegetarian, too. I was happy to discover various local Swahili dishes with excellent curry during my stay. Get a variety of raw tuna carpaccio to grilled lobster combined with local vegetables and spices. Be prepared to fall in love with special aromatized salts as curry or cinnamon and fresh baked bread!

What to do around Matemwe & Sevi Boutique Hotel

Matemwe is ideally located for snorkeling or diving at the Mnemba Atoll, one of the diving hotspots of the island. If you are planning several dives, Matemwe is a good choice. Ask the Diving specialist at Sevi to advise you. A snorkeling morning is around 45 USD which I found reasonable, all equipment used was of good quality, wet suit, water, coffee & snacks included. Of course you can choose a service from the local fisher man that are around the beach. Prices are cheaper but service quality varies. The staff of Sevi Boutique Hotel and Manager George are very happy to assist you for any kind of activity.
I would like to take the occasion here to say thank you for the time spent at Sevi and hope to be back soon!

25Hours Hotels The Royal Bavarian Munich

My personal highlight: Learning more about Munich’s history, the Bavarian Royals and their traditions in a modern, fancy and glorious interpreted way at 25 Hours Hotels Munich

How do you book your hotels? Which criteria do matter for your booking? How much do you know about 25Hours Hotels available in Germany, Austria and Switzerland? Let me introduce you to the new 25Hours HotelThe Royal Bavarian” in Munich. Get more insights on other 25Hours hotels on my accommodation guide here (Zurich) or here (Hamburg)!

I experienced 25 Hours Hotels this year the first time in Hamburg. I have to admit, before traveling to a city after having had excellent experiences with them, I first check, if a 25 Hours Hotel is available.

The Royal Bavarian opened its doors just recently and is brand new in Munich. It’s located 2 minutes from the train station and offers all high level standards and services known from other 25Hours Hotels.

What makes The Royal Bavarian Hotel in Munich special?

Anne one of the hotel staff members guides me through the house and explains to me significant details that were used to create this Bavarian surrounding. I see myriads of ironic and iconographic allusions to Bavarian history and its royal legacy. I love the story, that the Managers and the architect went for a guided sightseeing tour through Munich, to best grab and understand relevant details of its history. The goal was to transmit them into the design concept and interior to make the place authentic and real. Special elements as the ancient sledge, the swan chair or the furniture in the Boilerman Bar feature selected, materials. They create affectionate nods allover the place. This is the signature experience of this hotels.

The hotel is situated in a ancient building from the year 1800 ca. a former Imperial Post and Telegraph Office on the forecourt of the Central Station. That is why for example you find some ancient original typing machines in the hotel alley. Hotel guests have the opportunity to type their own letter, feel thrown back in time, and mail it to the wished address afterwards.

The catchy topic of the hotel is the Royal Bavarian History. I notice lots of Swan and Elefant elements all over the hotel. These were favorite animals of farmer royals. King Ludwig II of Bavaria, also known as the “Fairytale King was one of them, he lived in the castle called Neuschwanstein. Neuschwanstein literally means “New Swan Castle” referencing of “the Swan Knight” one of the Wagner’s characters.”. King Ludwig was a great admirer and supporter of Richard Wagner, the world-renowned composer.

Hotel & Restorant Lej da Staz Celerina

My personal highlight: Waking up early in the morning at Lake Staz observing the mist moving mystical & magical around me – This is a must experience hideaway in the Engadine

When it comes to travel to the Swiss Alps, Engadine is the destination of my choice. This region is not only famous for its Swiss Indian Summer in autumn. Here you enjoy hospitality on a phenomenal and very personal level.
On top, the food and dishes you get are of excellent quality. Coming here during autumn you encounter colorful pine and larch trees that are unique in Switzerland.

What to expect at Lej da Staz

The surrounding is unique at Hotel & Restorant Lej da Staz. The house is embedded in a protected natural area not accessible by car (7 minutes by car from St. Moritz main station) directly at the Lake of Staz. Enjoy absolute privacy and tranquility in the middle of a forest surrounded by the alps. The peak you admire from the terrace is the Mountain Piz Julier (3380 m). The hotel is managed by Anja & Hans-Jörg Zingg and a lovely super friendly staff.

Accommodation

The hotel offers 10 cozy bed rooms. All rooms are decorated with an authentic alpine style and offer good standard comfort. Obviously the room facing the Lake is the first choice of the house, book it if you have the chance! The view over the lake brings you to a fairy tale you have never been before.

Walking inside and outside the house you recognize that there has been put a lot of attention to details. The surrounding is maintained with love and make you feel like home. Take the advantage of being out in the middle of the nature, stroll through the forest and observe the squirrels swing from one tree branch to the other.

A dream all made of vanilla cream and puff pastry. They’re baked fresh every day!

Food at Lej da Staz

Great local and home made prepared food choices are available at Lej da Staz. Choose out of three food places: The restorant, the Stazer Club Stubä ( a cozy private room) or the Take away kiosk Quickquito located outside (available during sunny days).

Enjoy local hand made dried Engadine meat specialities or goat cheese specialities from their local cheesemaker.
I absolutely recommend their risotto. It comes with fresh mushrooms and local alp cheese that makes its taste intense and creamy.
The cheesecake is a must try and signature dish on the menu, it’s made of goat cheese. Their Saazer Moorechopf – sticky sweet chocolate marshmallow kisses are finger licking.

Want to spent more time in the Engadine?

Explore the region for great hikes, biking, sailing or skiing in winter.
A must do to get the whole picture of the Engadine Lakes is to visit Muottas Muragl. The view up here is astonishing, you can reach it by cable car or hike up/down.

Hotel Castello del Sole Ascona

My personal highlight: Getting to know the Val del Maggia in Ticino where among other delicacies risotto rice LOTO is cultivated. Be woken up by birds twittering facing rice paddies and feeling in a natural paradise not fare from home.

Hotel Castello del Sole is a place where you get rendezvous with happiness! It is located in the beautiful Ticino close to the village of Ascona at the Lago Maggiore. It’s part of the recently launched brand “The Living Circle“. Find more on the values and philosophy of the Living Circle in my recently published article here. Want to get inspired about other accommodation spots in Switzerland? Find more on my blog here.

Castello del Sole is a piece of history built back to the year 1532 from Francesco Orelli. It served as a hiding place for the followers of the new Protestant teachings. Around 1900 it was run as a simple Osteria offering rooms for guests. Today it has been transformed into an exclusive 5 star hotel property within an immense beautiful park reaching 100 hectares, the biggest hotel park in Switzerland.

The ideal home for couples or families looking for peace, genuine local mediterranean food or special wellness treatments as for example the VinoAqua-Therapie® containing grapes from their own land Terreni alla Maggia.

The high class service and a dedicated staff lead by Simon V. Jenny and his wife Gabriela Jenny make Hotel Castello be part of „Relais & Châteaux“ and the „Swiss Deluxe Hotels” awards.

Accommodation

Hotel del Castello offers 40 Junior Suites and 38 double/single rooms. The rooms offer elegance, class and high standard comfort, a complete stay away from home. The rooms are spacious and embedded in the tranquil park and rice fields. Families and couples find a home for weekend trips or longer residence due to the perfect equipped surrounding and facilities.

Gourmet food and Merlot grapes

Chef Mattias Roock is the Chef of the kitchen at Castello del Sole. He focusses on the use of fresh and local products and maintains a strong and close relationship to local farmers. The actual menu of the gourmet restaurant „Locanda Barbarossa“ is called “i sapori del nostro orto”. Which means, flavors of our gardens.

The ingredients and products used are cultivated exclusively from Ticino and the Terreni alla Maggia. This includes the Loto risotto rice for example or the exclusive rare black polenta and herbs from their hotel permaculture garden.

Additional hotel restaurants as the “Cortile Leone“, the „Tre Stagioni“ or the „Parco Saleggi“ follow this mediterranean farm to table  philosophy of Chef Roock. During summer a barbecue outside or a Streetfood van at the beach restaurant are absolutely recommended, too.

The Terreni alla Maggia offer an ideal soil for wine and other distillates. Ticino is the home of Merlot wine. The Merlot is paired perfectly with a nice beef ragu and polenta! Get a tour through the Terreni alla Maggia and explore all of their delicacies in the wine shop!

Yoga, retreats, kids entertaining program

Get a Yoga and nutrition coach, enjoy their outdoor/indoor pool or subscribe your kids to an entertainment program. The Piccolo Circo Castello del Sole featuring Aline Del Torre who trained at the famous Scuola Dimitri is the highlight for your kids learning juggling or acrobatics. Water lover must do a boat ride with the hotel owned Frauscher boat.
Experience an unforgettable helicopter ride to the close by Ristorante Rustico del Sole up on 1000 m. A breathtaking moment overlooking Lago Maggiore and the alps. The ideal surrounding to enjoy best homemade dishes from the Hotel Castello staff.

My personal highlights

The hotel is surrounded by an incredible green park and garden. All flowers found in my room are some of the most beautiful ever seen. An in-house garden center makes this possible. It’s the love they put in the decoration of the whole house making it a shiny jewel.

Waking up in the morning by singing birds, spending a moment on the terrace admiring rice fields cultivated in Switzerland, is something I never thought to experience in my life. The ample untouched fields are pure peace and joy for heart and soul.
